Simplifying Small Business Success with Tim Nevitt

In this episode of the Work the System podcast, host Josh Fonger introduces Tim Nevitt, a seasoned Business Systems Professional consultant with a unique approach to simplifying business challenges.

In this episode, we discussed:

  • Tim’s journey from discovering the power of systems to becoming a catalyst for change in small businesses.

  • The importance of clarity and simplification in tackling common pain points within businesses.

  • Tim’s knack for finding missing puzzle pieces to optimize business operations.

Josh: Welcome to the Work the System podcast, where we help entrepreneurs make more and work less by managing their systems. Today, we have a special guest, Tim Nevitt. Tim is the founder of Nevit Group, specializing in helping small businesses grow as a certified systems consultant. He primarily focuses on brick-and-mortar businesses in industries like building products, fitness, insurance, and more.

Tim: Well, basically, I’ve been a fan of systems before it was even defined that way, since I was a kid. I approach everything, from games to school, ministry projects, work, everything, as a system. It evolved into discovering your work and Sam Carpenter’s work back in 2008-2009, around 2010, in the aftermath of discovering this post-Katrina, which was a significant event here. Sam’s book was extremely useful in dealing with the massive disruption and change in family, friends, and the business environment. From there, life became quite simple because I understood the why and the desired outcome in virtually every part of my life.

Josh: I’ve been looking forward to this podcast for a long time. We’ve been friends for quite a while now. Why don’t you start by telling us about your background and a bit about yourself?

Tim: Well, basically, I’ve been a fan of systems before it was even defined that way, since I was a kid. I approached everything, from games to school to ministry projects, work, everything, as a system. It evolved into discovering your work and Sam Carpenter’s work back in 2008-2009, around 2010, in the aftermath of discovering this post-Katrina, which was a significant event here. Systems weren’t the only answer, at least for someone at my level. Sam’s book was extremely useful in dealing with the massive disruption and change in family, friends, and the business environment. From there, life became quite simple because I understood the why and the desired outcome in virtually every part of my life. Then, through Sam’s rewrites, I discovered you for the first time, maybe in 2018. Getting together with you during COVID, it’s clear that the clarity is something really useful to share. Thanks to a lot of client interactions and learning with you and the team, it’s great to share the simplicity of systems, save people time, anguish, and heartache. Every end has a linear process before it, and I kind of knew that as a kid. I kept seeking the answers to it, and with Sam’s fourth edition, the clarity couldn’t be clearer. It’s a joy to be part of the team and share that clarity with people, whatever is best in their lives.

Josh: Yeah, very good. So, a quick little plug if you have not read the book Work the System, go get a copy on Amazon or visit worksystem.com and get on Sam Carpenter’s list. Alright, so then, you’ve shifted your mindset, you’ve seen the world and how you’ve helped companies. Tell us why you shifted into that role as a consultant.

Tim: Well, in a corporate environment, which was most of my career, there are often too many people to please. You have the owner, the owner’s family, stockholders, the board of directors, and numerous clients. It’s challenging to manage more than a couple of random variables effectively. In a corporate environment, you’re dealing with tens or hundreds of random variables. The great thing about small businesses, it’s not just about the money. In corporate projects, it can take months or even years to make decisions. Small businesses are simpler. You’re usually dealing with an owner or a husband-and-wife team, and decisions can be made quickly, sometimes in minutes. It’s great to see a massive change in a business and a family in a matter of months instead of years.

Josh: That’s great. It’s great being a catalyst for change, and small businesses have that unique advantage of being nimble and able to change. That’s what Sam’s book is about. Can you share a story about who you’re working with and how it’s going well?

Tim: Currently, I’m involved with five clients. One of them is in the fitness consulting field. She’s a single mom with two kids, and her challenge was managing her time effectively. She would have her kids with her for one week and then focus entirely on her business the next week. This posed a challenge in an industry where clients expect weekly interactions. Within six weeks, we devised a system where she was fully engaged with her kids during her off week and maintained her business effectively. She set up substitutes and tools to ensure her clients didn’t feel neglected. She even took vacations, and her client base grew significantly.

Josh: That’s impressive. It sounds like you help clients find simplicity in their lives and businesses. What makes you unique as a consultant, and why should someone want to work with you?

Tim: One unique perspective I bring is the ability to see systems as puzzles. I’ve always approached things this way, looking for the missing pieces to complete the puzzle. I have a knack for simplifying complex issues. I understand that everyone is a rock star in some aspect of their business, and my role is to help them find where they excel and where they need improvement. I aim to be the missing piece that makes their business work more efficiently. It’s often about identifying simple solutions that can lead to significant improvements.

Josh: That’s a great perspective. You’ve had a wealth of experience, and it shows in how you help businesses. What’s the common problem or pain point you often encounter in businesses where someone might think, “I should reach out to Tim”?

Tim: The common pain point is confusion in some area of their business. Most business owners excel in one aspect but struggle with others. They might be geniuses in accounting but lack marketing skills or struggle with technology. My goal is to help them simplify and clarify their business processes and find the missing pieces to complete the puzzle. I’ve encountered this scenario in countless businesses, both large and small.

Josh: That makes a lot of sense. Clarity and simplification are essential. If anyone wants to connect with you and learn more about your services, where should they go?

Tim: The best way to reach me is through LinkedIn. You can find my profile by searching for Tim Nevitt, Work the System consultant.
